Ta Eksarchia in Athens

June 27, 2018

" Ta Eksarchia" is one of the most interesting and historical quarters of Athens. Originally, this was considered the furthest part of the very city centre. Here the inhabitants were artists and builders,
nowadays we would consider it Bohemien. The buildings are really nice and almost in every street there are a lot of bushes and trees, it is a green area.
In the 19th century, they settled here part of the Athens University and the Polytechnic. In the 17th November 1973 one tanker broke through the Polytechnic gate to sedate the students riots that were made against the regime. This place is a symbol of freedom and peace, cause, due to the students, the dictatorship (Junta Militar) fell over. That's way even today the Eksarchia is home for anarchists, students, homeless... it is really politically-left-active, and many times the police came to sedate the demonstrations that are taking place above all every 17th November (In 1985 and 2008 two young students got killed by the police).
My personal suggestion is to come and walk these streets, the architecture of the buildings and the murales are really something that you don't want to miss.
Absolutely, you have to pass by the Politechnic, where you can still see the old broken gates, but my advice is to explore the area in groups or at least not alone and at daylight. During the evening becomes really creepy, and it is not really safe. I explored it with my friend-guide Konstantina and a couple of not so nice people tried to approach us.
