Menton, holiday in French Riviera

Here we go again with another city of the French Riviera: Menton. This is the best place for holidays, if I had to buy a house in the South of France I would do it here. The architecture is lovely, it is next to the sea, and it is not a big city as Nice, so it is much calmer.
Let's start speaking about the old town, that is the part upon the hill. During the roman time here there was a road, the Julia Augusta, that was connecting Piacenza with Arles and was passing where now we see the Rue Longue. Another important historical fact that infuenced the birth of the "old Menton" was the construction of a new castle along this roman road by the Vento, family of Genoa. This permitted the development of a proper town around the castle.
The houses are all in warm colours, like yellow, brick-tone, salmon, beige, orange. The effect that they give all together is incredible. And the icing on the cake are the two churches: the Basilique Saint Michel Archange and the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, that with the two bell towers give even more charm to the "Menton-Postcard".

Eccoci di nuovo con un'altra città della Costa Azzurra: Mentone. Questo è un posto ideale per le vacanze, se dovessi comprare una casa nel sud della Francia lo farei qui. L'architettura è incantevole, si trova vicino al mare, e non è una città grande come Nizza, quindi è molto più tranquilla.
Cominciamo a parlare della città vecchia, che è la parte che si snoda sulla collina. Durante il periodo romano qui c'era una strada, la Julia Augusta, che collegava Piacenza ad Arles e passava dove ora vediamo la Rue Longue. Un altro fatto storico importante che ha influenzato la nascita della "vecchia Mentone" è stata la costruzione di un nuovo castello lungo proprio questa strada romana dai Vento, famiglia di Genova. Ciò ha permesso lo sviluppo di una città attorno al nucleo del castello.
Le case sono tutte in colori caldi, come il giallo, i toni del mattone, il salmone, il beige, l'arancione. L'effetto che danno tutti insieme è incredibile. E la ciliegina sulla torta sono le due chiese: la Basilique Saint Michel Archange e la Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, che con i due campanili danno ancora più fascino alla "Cartolina di Mentone".

Θα σας δειξω μια άλλη πόλη της Κυανής Ακτής: την Menton. Αυτό είναι το καλύτερο μέρος για διακοπές, αν έπρεπε να αγοράσω ένα σπίτι στη Νότια Γαλλία θα το έκανα εδώ. Η αρχιτεκτονική είναι όμορφη, είναι δίπλα στη θάλασσα και δεν είναι μια μεγάλη πόλη όπως η Νίκαια, γι 'αυτό είναι πολύ πιο ήρεμη.
Ας αρχίσουμε να μιλάμε για την παλιά πόλη, που είναι το κομμάτι πάνω στο λόφο. Κατά τη διάρκεια της ρωμαϊκής εποχής υπήρχε ένας δρόμος, Julia Augusta, ο οποίος συνδέει την Piacenza με την Arles και περνούσε εκεί που τώρα βλέπουμε την Rue Longue. Ένα άλλο σημαντικό ιστορικό γεγονός που έφερε στο φως τη γέννηση του "παλιού Μέντον" ήταν η κατασκευή ενός νέου κάστρου κατά μήκος αυτού του ρωμαϊκού δρόμου από την οικογένεια της Γένοβας Vento. Αυτό επέτρεψε την ανάπτυξη μιας πόλης γύρω από το κάστρο.
Τα σπίτια είναι όλα σε ζεστά χρώματα, όπως κίτρινο, κεραμιδί, σομόν, μπεζ, πορτοκαλί. Το αποτέλεσμα που δίνουν όλα μαζί είναι απίστευτο. Και το κερασάκι στην τούρτα είναι οι δύο εκκλησίες: το Basilique Saint Michel Archange και το Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, που με τα δύο καμπαναριά δίνουν ακόμα μεγαλύτερη γοητεία στη "καρτ ποστάλ της Menton".
Today on the ruins of the castle there is a cemetery: Vieux Château Cemetery. This is a MUST. The view from here is breathtaking and the tombs themselves are fascinating.

Σήμερα στα ερείπια του κάστρου υπάρχει ένα νεκροταφείο: Vieux Château Cemetery. Αυτό είναι κάτι που πρέπει να δείτε οπωσδήποτε. Η θέα από εδώ είναι εκπληκτική και οι ίδιοι οι τάφοι είναι συναρπαστικοί.
At the feet of the old town there are the beaches, where you can dive into the water, or simply have a walk.
Menton is strictly connected to the poet, designer, filmmaker Jean Cocteau. In 1950s he painted the wedding room at the Mairie (town hall), and after that they declared him honorary citizen. In 1636 was built a Bastion as a defence for the port by the Princes of Monaco. Cocteau restored it decorating the alcoves, the reception hall and the outer walls with mosaics. After three years from his death was opened the Bastion Museum and a new exhibition of Cocteau work is installed every year.
In 2011 opened the Jean Cocteau Museum. The architect Ricciotti explain its design: "Black and white no longer serve as colours here...they create an interplay of structural forces calling to mind both the artist’s works on paper and the poet’s personality, his zones of light and darkness".
If you pass by on February, don't miss the Lemon festival. Menton has a micro climate in respect of all the rest of the French Mediterranean coast, it has milder winters and warmers nights in the summer, that's why lemons and oranges grow up so easily here, and the lemon became the symbol of the city. Every year there is a new theme for the festival and the Casino gardens in the centre of the town are entirely decorated with citrus fruits.

Ai piedi del centro storico ci sono le spiagge, dove è possibile fare un tuffo in acqua, o semplicemente fare una passeggiata.
Mentone è strettamente legata al poeta, designer, regista Jean Cocteau. Negli anni '50 dipinse la sala del matrimonio al Mairie (municipio), e in seguito lo dichiararono cittadino onorario. Nel 1636 fu costruito un Bastione come difesa per il porto dai Principi di Monaco. Cocteau lo ha restaurato decorando le alcove, la reception e le pareti esterne con mosaici. Dopo tre anni dalla sua morte è stato aperto il Museo del Bastione e una nuova mostra di Cocteau viene installata ogni anno.
Nel 2011 ha aperto il Museo Jean Cocteau. L'architetto Ricciotti spiega il suo design: "Il bianco e il nero non servono più come colori qui... creano un gioco di forze strutturali che richiamano alla mente sia le opere dell'artista sulla carta e la personalità del poeta, le sue zone di luce e oscurità".
Se ci passate a febbraio, non perdete il festival del limone. Mentone ha un microclima rispetto a tutto il resto della costa mediterranea francese, ha inverni più miti e notti più calde in estate, ecco perché i limoni e le arance crescono così facilmente qui, e il limone è diventato il simbolo della città. Ogni anno c'è un nuovo tema per il festival e i giardini del Casinò nel centro della città sono interamente decorati con agrumi.
P. s. abbiamo fatto un picnic nel parco vicino al Museo del Bastione: vista mare, brezza e ombra sotto le palme, semplicemente perfetto.

Στα πόδια της παλιάς πόλης υπάρχουν οι παραλίες, όπου μπορείτε να βουτήξετε στο νερό ή απλά να κάνετε μια βόλτα.
H Menton συνδέεται στενά με τον ποιητή, σχεδιαστή, σκηνοθέτη Jean Cocteau. Στη δεκαετία του 1950 ζωγράφισε τη γαμήλια αίθουσα στο Mairie (δημαρχείο), και μετά τον κήρυξε επίτιμο πολίτη. Το 1636 χτίστηκε ένας προμαχώνας ως άμυνα του λιμανιού από τους πρίγκιπες του Μονακό. Ο Cocteau την αποκατέστησε διακοσμώντας τις εσοχές, την αίθουσα υποδοχής και τους εξωτερικούς τοίχους με ψηφιδωτά. Μετά από τρία χρόνια από το θάνατό του άνοιξε το μουσείο Bastion και μια νέα έκθεση της εργασίας Cocteau εγκαθίσταται κάθε χρόνο.
Το 2011 άνοιξε το Μουσείο Jean Cocteau. Ο αρχιτέκτονας Ricciotti εξηγεί τη σχεδίασή του: «Το άσπρο και το μαύρο δεν χρησιμεύουν πλέον ως χρώματα εδώ... δημιουργούν μια αλληλεπίδραση διαρθρωτικών δυνάμεων που θυμίζουν τόσο τα έργα του καλλιτέχνη σε χαρτί όσο και την προσωπικότητα του ποιητή, τις ζώνες του φωτός και του σκοταδιού».
Αν περάσετε τον Φεβρουάριο, μην χάσετε το φεστιβάλ των λεμονιών. H Menton έχει ένα μικροκλίμα σε σχέση με όλη την υπόλοιπη γαλλική ακτή της Μεσογείου, έχει πιο ήπιους χειμώνες και ζεστές νύχτες το καλοκαίρι, γι 'αυτό και τα λεμόνια και τα πορτοκάλια μεγαλώνουν τόσο εύκολα, και το λεμόνι έγινε το σύμβολο της πόλης. Κάθε χρόνο υπάρχει ένα νέο θέμα για το φεστιβάλ και οι κήποι του Καζίνο στο κέντρο της πόλης είναι πλήρως διακοσμημένοι με εσπεριδοειδή.

Un'altra caratteristica importante di Mentone sono i suoi giardini. La cattiva notizia è che quasi tutti sono a pagamento, tranne uno: Jardin du Palais le Carnolès, è lì che siamo andate. Ma io e mia sorella abbiamo fatto l'errore di andare a piedi... non fatelo perché è piuttosto lontano. Per il resto è una bella zona, è una specie di giardino botanico con installazioni lungo il percorso (statue, capanne, pezzi d'arte). È ombreggiato, è possibile trovare panchine, dove si vedono persone giocare a tennis e sono presenti tutti i tipi di agrumi.

Ένα άλλο σημαντικό χαρακτηριστικό του Menton είναι οι κήποι του. Το κακό είναι ότι πρέπει να πληρώσετε είσοδο σχεδόν σε όλους στου κήπους, εκτός από ένα: Jardin du Palais le Carnolès, εκεί που πήγαμε. Αλλά η αδερφή μου και εγώ κάναμε το λάθος να πάμε με τα πόδια... μην το κάνετε γιατί είναι αρκετά μακριά. Για τα υπόλοιπα είναι μια ωραία περιοχή, είναι ένα είδος βοτανικού κήπου με εγκαταστάσεις μέσω του μονοπατιού (αγάλματα, καλύβες, έργα τέχνης). Είναι σκιασμένη, μπορείτε να βρείτε πάγκους, όπου μπορείτε να παρακολουθήσετε τους ανθρώπους που παίζουν τένις και υπάρχουν όλα τα είδη των εσπεριδοειδών.
