Since we decided to visit Japan, I could not avoid a stop in Hiroshima, where in the 1945 one of the two atomic bombs exploded. We arrived here by the Shinkansen train Kyoto-Hiroshima after a couple of hours (check day 3 to see how to get the JRPass and travel for free for 7 days). The first thing that we did was visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. It has been one of the strongest experiences that I have ever had. I was feeling so heavy after that tour, but it is so important to remember, and ANYONE should go. For a moment, with the photos, the audioguides and the pieces of clothes and buildings that were found, you can imagine being there with them.
Hiroshima was so hurt that they clearly tried to cover up this wound. Before going, I was expecting to find a big part of the city still destroyed and another new part redeveloped, but it hasn't been like that. If you don't go to the memorial, you cannot understand what happened. They rebuilt everything, except one building in the Memorial park, so that their eyes can forget what they had to deal with. This building didn't collapse, because it was exactly 40 meters next to the hypocentre. And in correspondence of the exact hypocentre, there is a big torch with a flame that never stops.

Really close to Hiroshima there is a special island that you cannot miss: Itsukushima, or also know as Miyajima island. Again you can use the ferry boat of the JR lines, and travel for free with your JRPass from Miyajimaguchi. During the sail you will spot some oysters cultivations in the sea, and many fishermen that with their boats go to collect them. It is a must to try the oysters of Miyajima. I suggest them with paprika and lemon.

Another of the biggest attractions, at least for me, were the free deers. I mean, look at my face...
Like in Nara, you can find deers all over the place, just pay attention because they are always hungry, so if you have something to eat, they will come to you, and not in a shy way. I have seen one deer trying to eat a lady's T-shirt. But if you have nothing edible with you, you can gently pet them.

When you get off the ferry boat and you get over the first shock of seeing free deers everywhere, you can walk through the souvenir-street, where I actually bought almost all the souvenirs that I got from Japan. They have really good prices, and you can find every sort of things to buy: from earrings, to keychains, to kimono, to cookies... Speaking of cookies, I am sorry for not having a picture of them, but, give a try to the Momiji Manju, maple shaped cakes, stuffed with any flavours (adorable the one with cheese).

As I said in day 4, the typical food of Hiroshima is: Okonomiyaki. You have to stop in one of the restaurants that do it and try it. I can suggest you the place Kurawanka where you can actually see the process to make this dish (omelette, noodles, vegetables, egg + oysters if you want...). You don't even understand that you are waiting, because the process is another experience that you will enjoy watching.

The day after was spent in Tokyo. We got off at Shibuya station and the first thing that we saw in this Japanese trip has been the statue of the loyal dog Hachiko. Exactly next to Hachiko, there is the famous Shibuya crossing: zebra lines in every direction, even diagonally, because the crowd is so much during the rush hour, that they can cross everywhere they want.

Then we explored the area across the street full of shopping malls, with sounds, songs and games. In few words we got immediately inside the Japanese reality. If you are hungry I suggest to stop at the restaurant Muteppo, they don't speak a lot of English, but just order a "set" of Ramen and trust them! They are cheap and the portions are big. It is not turistic at all and you will live a full Japanese experience.

We kept walking from Shibuya till the Shinto shrine of Meiji Jingu. This was the first experience with a Japanese shrine, we learnt to clean our hands and mouth before entering, we learnt how to pray ringing the bells of the shrine and we admired the colourful barrels of sake that you can find on the way.

After the Shinto shrine, we decided to see a Buddhist temple, the Sensoji Temple in Taito City (we got by metro). This was an incredible experience! All the shrines and temples close around 16.00 maximum 17.00. We arrived around 17.00, unfortunately the souvenir shops in the street to reach it were closed, but the lights of the temple and the pagoda were on, and it has been sooooo magical, you can see it from the pictures!

We headed west to the Sumida river, where we had the spectacular view of the tall Tokyo Skytree tower reflected in the water. Before returning home we had dinner in the area, in the restaurant Yakitori, that I definitely suggest, but it is a little bit more expensive than the first one, and the portions were a little bit smaller, but the quality was GREAT. Our night ended with a beer in a cat cafe... It was an experience that I really wanted to try, but that I definitely not suggest. Maybe I was just not lucky, but the smell was really bad and the place was kept in bad conditions. The cats were treated well, but they didn't seem happy to be pet, maybe cause a lot of people do it. And it was extremely expensive, cause you pay a sort of entrance plus your drink.
